So you're ready to pop the question. You want to make it a big surprise that she never saw coming. Now you just need the ring. You have a pretty good idea of what kind of diamond wedding ring she likes (hopefully you have a great idea). All of a sudden you realize, you don't know what her finger size is. If this sounds like you then you're in luck. I am going to give you some ideas on how to figure out this common conundrum for men. After all, I was once in your shoes and someone helped me out the same way. We are going to start simple and work our way up.

Sneaky Idea Number One. This is about as obvious as it gets but some of us guys out there aren't too sharp. Especially when love and marriage is on our minds. Find an old ring that she never or seldom wears anymore and take it to the jewelers for sizing. The reason you want one that she doesn't wear anymore is so she doesn't realize it is gone for the day. If you know what finger she wore it on, then the jeweler can adjust for the wedding ring size. If you don't know which finger, then act like you stumbled across the ring and ask her to put it for you. Make it seem like you merely thought it looked nice and wondered why she never wore it anymore. When she puts the ring on make a mental note of which hand and finger it was. Don't write it down for her to find somewhere later. That will defeat the purpose of being sneaky.

Sneaky Idea Number Two. If you have already done the traditional thing by asking her parents for their blessing before you propose then you can get her mom or sister involved. This could be a huge time saver for you. Her mom or sister might know what ring size she wears already. If they are aware of the impending proposal and you trust they can keep their traps shut then call and ask. Just know that moms, daughters and sisters usually share a strong bond/connection that no man, especially outside of the family, can break. Some mothers may just be silly enough to think they are keeping something from their little girl and spill the beans. Just a word of caution.

Sneaky Idea Number Three. Take her with you to buy a gift for your mom, grandmother, sister, or any other female in your family. Proceed under the guise that you want some type of ring as the gift and you need to see what it will look like on a woman's hand. That's option one. Option two is when you're asked what size your family member wears, you use your future fiancé's (if she says yes) hand to compare and get her ring finger measured if she doesn't know it already. Option three is to call the jewelry shop ahead of time and tell the employee what you are trying to do. They will more than likely help you however you need them to.

My wife never saw it coming and I was lucky enough for her to give me a yes.
