Wedding rings are something you see everyday on the fourth finger of the left hand, and may not think twice about until it is time for you to start searching for wedding rings yourself, and you may begin pondering the rhyme and reason for this specific tradition.
So we are here to help broaden your knowledge about them and to give you a brief history of wedding rings and also engagement rings...
Wedding ring origins began all the way back in the Ancient Egyptians times when pharaohs first used the circle, a shape with no beginning or end, in order to portray eternity. This was then developed through to the Roman times when it became customary to wear a wedding ring to honour the pledge of marriage publicly.
The thought that the fourth finger on the left hand should be the place for the wedding ring was believed to have originated once again from the Egyptians, who believed that vena amoris (vein of love) travelled directly from the heart to the fourth finger on the left hand. Leading to the modern day where both engagement and wedding rings are worn on that same finger.
Now it hasn't always been customary for gents to wear wedding rings, Greek Orthodox churches introduced both men and women wearing a wedding ring, however it was not until Word war II that there was a noted rise in men wearing wedding rings. Due to the uncertainty of the times couples married in anticipation of the separation, and the ring ultimately functioned as a sentimental connection for the men fighting to know that their loved one was waiting for them to return. Therefore providing comfort and motivation in such a testing time.
