When you start your engagement ring search the stark reality of this unknown world can hit you like a tonne of bricks. You want to know what sort of engagement ring you can get for your budget, you want to know how to get the best possible deal without the chance of being ripped off, and most importantly you want to know that it's the perfect engagement ring.

With this in mind, we have drawn upon our most asked questions and unknown entities when it comes to diamonds; in order to make your first steps into the engagement ring world easy.

1. What is a good colour for a medium sized diamond?

We recommend a colour G for medium diamonds, this means that the diamond is in the colourless category and will be a beautiful bright white colour. At Aurus we can tailor the diamond to any specification you want, as you can see in the diagram below D is the highest colour grade, D colour diamonds are very bright white, the scale then goes down the alphabet as diamonds become more yellow.  We would recommend a H being the lowest colour grade to go as the diamond will still look white.

2. What does clarity mean?

In short, clarity is the impurities in a diamond. Being a natural substance diamonds will have birth marks from their creation. Not only do these make a diamond beautifully unique, they are measured under a 20 x magnification, so you will not see them with the naked eye. At Aurus we deem a VS2 grade to be a really good choice for a centre diamond, VS stands for very slightly included and this translates as very slight marks within the diamond when under the magnifying glass.

3. Why are round diamonds more expensive?

Round diamonds are classically recognised as an engagement ring cut, set into the claw setting in a one stone ring. As with a lot of things this increases the value of something if it becomes popular. Round diamonds are also more rare when it comes to the raw excavated diamond, to find a rough diamond that will cut perfectly into a round stone with minimal wastage is very rare, therefore the prices match this supply.

4. Why do some diamonds not come with a certificate?

Some jewellers will proclaim that they certify their diamonds themselves, this will ultimately make their diamonds cheaper as certifying diamonds costs money. Whereas other retailers will sell their diamonds without a certificate at all. Although both of these options makes for a cheaper ring, we would always recommend purchasing a diamond that comes with a reputable certificate, the names to look out for are GIA IGI HRD. With these certificates comes a guarantee that your diamond is un-treated and a colour clarity grade that you paid for.

5. Why are your diamonds more expensive than another jewellers I have visited?

Aurus believes in only selling the best quality metal and diamonds in both their engagement and wedding rings. We only source diamonds that come with a GIA HRD or IGI certificate, as we know that these diamonds have not been treated to make them look like a higher grading, which can in time mean that the diamond has been weakened through the treatment. With these well know diamond laboratories comes a premium in price, this extra value is an investment and should be seen as one.

It can be tempting to go for the cheaper ring, but you may not have been told the whole truth about the diamond, and high street retailers will generally sell engagement rings without certificates, making the rings cheaper, but these diamonds do have a tendency to cloud or crack over time so see this an investment, and invest wisely!
